The park we use to go often has a pond in the middle, about 200-300 meters (yards) across and about 500 meters long.
Once walking near the water I noticed he was missing for awhile and then I saw him in the middle of the water chasing the ducks as usual. I start worrying since he was never that far away. I called him. He responded right away looking at me. But then instead of swimming toawrds me , he looked around and realized that the other bank of the pond is closer, swam in the opposite of me direction and ran around the pond as fast as possible. I did not interfere with his plan and did not hide my joy and pride of him when he arrived!

Smart dog you have there, mine is pretty smart actually too smart for his own good. But he has done some amazing things that I can not explain. A couple of weeks ago I took him to visit my elderly granpda. When we got there i found my grandpa lying on the floor wedged between the counter and wall. I called for emergency help and then tried to help him sit up so he could breathe. But he was to heavy, and all of sudden my dog who happens to be a young Lab comes running in the room. He has this amazing ability to sense peoples emotions. I thought he was coming in to just comfort my grandpa but instead he got underneath me grandpa and tried to push him up with his weight. When that did not work he laid under my grandpa and supported him untll the medics arrived. He just knew he has never been trained. But I could never have been more proud and now he is my grandpas Rescue Angel. But he has done other stuff like that before. He also has a flip side to his intelligence and manipulates people but I loce him all the same.

Dogs are not great logical thinkers but they do have great survival skills.

Your dog knew the far shore was closer and that swimming there and then running around the pond was the faster and easier route.

Good dog for coming when called. Have a biscuit.

Yes this sounds like a great dog : smart and loyal!
Congratulations!
Oh to answer your question - mine is still a puppy (17 weeks old german shepherd).
I dont have much experience with dogs so I really dont know if he is that smart. But he knows how to sit, roll, kiss (lick hands), potty trained by 12 weeks and goes to the fridge when I ask him if he wants an ice.

my tibetan terrier curley is the smartest. The second would either be my yorkie or shih tzu can't tell yet cuz I haven't had the yorkie very long. Then the siberian husky. And last on the intelligence scale would be my chihuahuas....not the brightest but sweet.

What a smart dog you've got there!

My dog's pretty smart (she learns things very quickly), but sometimes her "puppy-ness" interferes with it and she does stupid things. lol. Sometimes she just doesn't realize her limits.

Thats great :)

Our Cavalier pup nods and shakes his head when we ask him a yes or no question, and if we give him some choices (E.g. asking him where he wants to go) he will lay down for which he chooses

it's good he can think for himself, but when you called him he should have obeyed you. that is the priority. what if there had been a dangerous siutuation that his obedience, or disobedience, to your call would have saved or jepordised his life?
