If you have a tree that produces many high quality walnuts, planting one of those walnuts will NOT ensure a tree that produces many high quality walnuts.

You would want to 'clone' the mother plant. This can be done by grafting a portion of the mother from a cutting (a walnut limb to a suitable trunk) or from layering. Layering can be done by wrapping a ball of soil around a branch using cloth to hold it in place. Keep the ball moist and roots will begin to grow into the ball. This can then be cut from the mother tree and planted. Either method will ensure a production portion of the tree that is genetically identical to the mother tree. If matured, the tree will produce a similar quality/quantity of nut.

If you just want a walnut tree and don't care about nut production, then http://www.ubcbotanicalgarden.org/forums/showthread.php?t=11260
has some information on growth from seed (for black walnuts).

Your local agricultural extension agent or a university ag professor should be able to help you with further details.
