Some one please explain to me why, when someone ask how old is your child the other person will state it in months when it is over 12 months?

I understand saying they are 1-11 months but once they hit 12 months they are a 1yr old so why not just say that?

It especially bugs me when people will say oh their 24 months! Just say their 2 what the heck!
sorry this bothers me

so will someone please help explain why they do this?

Because there are that many developmental changes in that 2nd year that you need to say '18 months' so people will know what stage your child is at.

It used to puzzle me, but now I have kids, I totally understand.

Like everyone else says, there's a huge developmental difference between a 12 month old, and a 23 month old, but they're both '1'.

But like you, some people are bothered by that, so I've taken to saying things like 'He'll be 2 in February.' That way, they know that he's 1, but also the people that are more interested can figure out that he's 22 months.

Yeah I always wondered about that too. I mean if the kid is 18 months I guess I can see saying that but if the kid is 12 months I would just say a year! I agree with everyone about the clothes/developmental stages but I think when you're at the bank and someone says "Oh what a cute little one how old is she" It bugs me a bit too when they say "24 months".

I did not understand this either at first, but it does make sense. Babies grow very fast and there is a major difference between a 13 month old and a 23 month old. They are so different that calling them all 1 year olds would not be an accurate description of them. It's like calling a car a Ford, well is it a 150 or a Mustang?

I agree, but childrens clothing is listed in months until they turn two. Most doctors ask for "months" also when you see a pedatrician.
