On December 14, 2007, my cat was euthanized due to his old age and increasing health issues....I miss him alot, and so do the rest of my family.

I was wondering, what is a good amount of time to wait and think about getting a new cat? (it will be a rescue kitten!)

Any advice or condolences are great.
please and thanks.

I would like to thank all of you for your advice and concerns. He was a huge part of my life. My mom said we will definately be getting another pet, but she isnt sure when. In the meantime....
I just found a claw casing and a whisker that he shed.... =,[ it's so hard to believe that he isn't here anymore!! It doesn't feel real...

Absolutely wait until you're ready! It could be a day, a week, even a few years, it depends on the person. But I think it's a great testament to the kind of person you are that you would be willing to overcome your grief enough to save the life of another cat who will be just as happy in his/her life as your former pet was. I think it says alot about you. :)

I am so sorry for your loss! Losing a pet is so much harder than most people realize and I sincerely hope you and your family are doing okay.

If you're interested, there's a website where you can light a virtual candle (free) in your pet's memory, sort of an online tribute to your cat so you and others can always visit the memorial and remember him. You can include his picture, his name, your name, all sorts of beautiful things. :) It's http://www.in-memory-of-pets.com and it's a great resource for people who are going through what you're going through, even through the decisions about when to get a new animal and how to cope with things. :)

Best wishes! :)

Pain is the price of love and it's always hard to say good bye to a friend. My Grey tabby Mulder died this summer and it's was pretty rough going. I went to Iraq and he was waiting for me, I went to Afghanistan and he was there, ready to take up his favorite sleeping spot. His calming easy going nature brought me a lot of peace after some hard times. His large green eyes blinking slowly at me, the way he would fall over on his side and then roll over on his back to nap right in the middle of the floor, the way he liked to be pet (Backwards then forwards), all gone now. I was planning on him being there forever. It never occurred to me to not have Mulder around. Now, no more. So sorry for your own lost cat, it's very hard. But, remember that anothercat that comes along, does not Replace, but rather succeeds him in an unbroken line of friendship. It's said that a beloved pet will not enter the kingdom of heaven without his master, waiting by the gates until joined. Remember too, that Springtime brings promises of Kittens. Wait until then and see how you feel.

I'm really sorry to hear that.
Like everyone else has said it's really up to you. I thought that I wouldn't have anymore cats after mine died but the house was too quiet and I missed having cats around too much. I got two rescued cats - brothers and it's so much nicer in the house now. I waited about 6 months before I decided to get two more. It's always nicer to rehome cats if you can as you give them a second chance.
It's when you feel ready.

I lost my last two old cats within 3 months of each other, they were both 16. I did nothing for about 6 months, then my sister decided to get me a cat for my 50th birthday. She waited outside the gate of the animal refuge till they opened - fortunately, as it was not kitten season. There were just two kittens there, brother and sister, sitting close together as if they did not want to be separated. Of course she took them both. Now they are six and I have had so much love and fun withe them. I hope you find another kitty or kitties soon - if you can, get two as they are company for each other, and fun to watch. All the best from me and my kitties,xx.

it all depends on you. You get the kitten whenever you feel ready to. Some people wait years to get another one. Some people would want one right away.

Sorry for the loss of your cat. I'm sure he's had a good life:-)

I'm so sorry, I know it is like losing a part of yourself. If you know already that you will be another cat, there really is no set time frame. There is no right or wrong. The new kitty will not be a replacement, just a new joy for your family.

First i'd like to say to you i'm sorry for your loss, it has happened to me before. Once my cat died i took a day to grieve and no longer i knew my cat would have wanted me to be happy and so i got a kitten. If that's how you feel i'd adopt one soon they are so happy and help you forget your troubles.

I'm so sorry, I know how you feel, I'm afraid my cat Nicky may be dying also.

Maybe if you got a new kitty, then it may help you get over the old one...?
