Done deal. Several people have answered his question and explained the way that they use the Advent wreath.

The three purple candles represent Christ's royalty and hint at the upcoming sorrow He underwent on the Cross. The rose/pink candle symbolizes His innocence and incarnation as a child.

Some people light the purple candles on the first three Sundays and reserve the rose or pink for the last Sunday before Christmas. Others light the pink candle on the third Sunday before Christmas, which is "Gaudete Sunday," or "Rejoicing Sunday." It depends on the tradition you're used to, I think.

The First Candle (The Candle of Prophecy/Hope)

The first candle is sometimes called the candle of prophecy because it symbolizes the promises the prophets delivered as messages from God; promises that foretold Christ’s birth. Others consider the candle to be a symbol of the hope we have in Christ and so it is called the Hope candle.

The Second Candle (The Candle of the Way)

The second candle shows that Christ is the Way. Christians are lost in sin and Christ is the Light sent into the world to show them the way out of darkness.

The Third Candle (The Candle of Joy)

The third candle indicates that the only lasting Joy to be found in life on earth is through Christ. All other joy is fleeting and does not last.

The Fourth Candle (The Candle of Peace)

The fourth candle reminds that Jesus comes to bring Peace to both the world and to people's hearts. Without Christ there is no peace in this world.

According to African religions, which I used to go many years ago and I have a huge respect, especially because they worship nature and they believe there is a "god" that correspond to each part of nature, a god to rivers, other to mountains, other to ocean, other to wind, other to forest/woods, etc, I used to light candles like that:

pink - for joy and children
yellow - for money and financial issues
light blue - for peace and to calm down
red - for protection (Saint George - the warrior)
black and white - for wisdom and old people
dark blue - to Virgin Mary or Goddess
brown - for Justice
dark green - for health and also to spirits of the forest
light green - for healing
purple - for enlightenment (also Saint Germain)
White - for God and Jesus

I love that...

Peace!
Edit: I don't light those candles anymore, but I picture the color in my mind and pray.
