There is the TRUE church then there is all the rest. There has always been a remnant following the truth. But JS himself DID join a church! But later did follow what he had been led to do and start the LDS church. So, take it with a grain of salt. Plus, think about it! How could we get back to Heavenly Father if there were no true churches upon the earth? What would be our moral compass, etc?
