this is one of the wrong principles christianism teaches...this legitimes horrible things like hitler or mussolini...they hit you? give them the possibility to hit you again...this shows that christianism is a religion made for humil people not to rebell towards political leaders

A few hundreds of years ago the Vikings settled Iceland. They were very warlike. Any insult would draw a response and the fights were to death. If somebody killed one of your relatives or friends you were required to defend them.
Iceland was running out of people, they were dying out from the constant dueling and feuding.
On was of his trips to Europe somebody explained that turn the other cheek stuff to the king of Iceland. When he got back to Iceland he forced everybody to become Christian and follow that rule.
People still live in Iceland, the did not all kill each other.
They only turn the cheek once though. If you provoke them again that is it.

Have courage and face the evil person. With courage we don't have to live in fear. The resistence is getting angry and losing ourselves instead of remaining calm and thinking with our higher mind. If someone strikes me I don't have to hit them back or I may it depends on what my higher mind thinks is right. Am I striking back in anger or self-defense? Striking because of anger is a sign on ignorance and fear.

It seems that Jesus is assuming we know what the definition of evil is. In fact that is a strange definition. If someone strikes you, they are not necessarily evil. You might have had it coming.

That passage doesnt literally mean let people hit you and give them better targets. Jesus never gave his teachings in a straight forward way. that lesson means dont retailate or bite back when someone is rude or mean.
i think its an idea that would do this site, and the whole world, a lot of good.

I agree w/ everything Jesus says. I think we are to turn the other cheek. However, I don't believe we can't defend ourselves @ all.

Check your translation of the bible first. Secondly any person who treats another unjustly is an evei person. Thirdly, here we are taught meekness, itf everyone did what jesus teaches here, there would be no wars because the spirit of revenge and greed and retaliation would be squashed underfoot.

I believe in all the teachings of JESUS and not just the easy ones. That is why many of the "answers" on here from Christians are troubling. We are not called to spout angry words at others even when they do so to us. It is not easy but we have to remember that we will answer for every word we speak OR TYPE.
Remember, GOD loves you even when you don't love Him!

Yes to a degree, but if your life is at stake you do what you can to get away (If you take it literally).....I think it's more symbolic though. Someone does something ment to hurt you, you don't take the bait to retaliate. You do your best to be peaceable and no one can say you were in the wrong at all.

Well I think it's more about trying to understand your enemy without attacking him.
But I saw a Western one time where a cowboy said the third hit was his, after the guy hit him twice.
