Vista has more features, better interface, most new application and softwares are Vista compatible. Vista is far more secured than XP. If you get XP now then you would have to upgrade in near future. I would reccomend getting Vista.

Well it depends. Vista requires at least 1Gige of Ram just for the OS with the new 3D effects called " Aero" but it looks fantastic but imagine if you load more programs you will need at least 2Gige for the whole thing to work. You will need video cards supports 3Ds. a higher processor well qualified hardware you know what I mean.
While XP can be load in a pc with 512Mega's and is more stable that Vista and you will find all the softwares in the market supports XP but some difficulties with Vista. If you can spend!! well then pick the Vista!!!

(NOTE: There are many "Pro Microsoft" accounts on YA!. You will notice that any response that goes against their way of thinking will immediately get a bunch of thumb down ratings. Several other post in this thread have already had that happen but definitely need to be read.)

Having run both Vista and XP (as well as numerous other operating systems), I'd say that XP would be my choice at the moment between the two. XP has been around a lot longer and most 3rd party developers have XP figured out. With Vista, 3rd party developers are getting used to the new security model (which is an improvement for Microsoft...still not perfect though) and has lead to some of the compatibility issues for older software.

Vista also tends to require a higher end system, but that is the tendency of all Microsoft operating systems. Basically they are adding more bloat (yes, bloat as you don't have options to not install most of the features, just disable) that make things "prettier". The memory requirements for Vista are about double that of XP. Fortunately memory prices have come down in price.

** Erwing ** - Want to point out that XP does support up to 4 GB of RAM just like Vista. You can even get XP 64bit that supports higher quantities, just like Vista 64bit. You might be thinking of the typical economy motherboard limit of 2GB.

Most businesses of any size (more so those with an actual IT department) are holding off on Vista because of the hardware requirements and the lack of incentive to migrate from XP to Vista. Basically if you have XP, the recommendation is to stay with XP rather than upgrading as there will be little benefit to doing so.

Oh, an interesting article you might want to read does a comparison of the upcoming service packs for both XP and Vista. Apparently the Vista SP does little to improve performance while the XP SP gives a nice boost.

I haven't gotten quite to the point of downgrading my home Vista PCs to XP (I have 3 w/ Vista, 1 older with XP) but I'm really thinking to do it if I have some time over this winter break.

Vista has newer features and can handle higher-end hardware (since most of the new high-end stuff isn't XP compatible anymore, and XP can't handle more than 2 GB RAM), and Vista also has more security features (to the point where you have to disable some things in order to make some programs, especially online games, work.) However, there are still a lot of compatibility issues between XP and Vista. If you use a lot of programs that havben't been made 100% Vista compatible yet, and you can't live without them, don't switch.

Also, the requirements for programs is much higher on Vista than XP. Vista is a MAJOR resource hog. From what I've seen, on things list list minimum requirements for both, the requirements for Vista is almost double that of XP to run the same program.

In general, though, I'd recommend Vista if you can afford to get a good PC with it. They've worked out most of the major bugs and most software developers have made things Vista compatible now.

Vista is a poor copy of Mac OS X. Even Microsoft employees will admit to this. If you have to decide between XP & Vista and you NEED your computer to work, go for XP. They'll phase it out eventually but you'll be able to use it for at least another 5 years without worrying too much.

Vista will EAT your hardwares abilities. It doesn't really matter how good the system you install it on is. It also has massive amounts of issues with not being compatible with software OR hardware / peripherals without a large number of patches to be installed.

And while it is more secure than XP you'll have to cope with constant "are you sure" messages when you perform an action and it's still a target for hackers & viruses. Oh, and there are frequent security updates you have to install.

Overall, Vista looks pretty but was released too soon. Wait a while until you upgrade, stick with XP until you have no choice or go out and buy a Mac which is the best hardware (as tested by PC World) to run Vista on.

Wow. Dare to offer an opinion about operating systems and people vote you down. To all who doubt what we're saying here follow these links:

Satisfied? And did you fail to notice I'm a PC user as well?

I'm using XP, but Vista is new. I hear it still has a number of problems. Just this week, I tried to help a friend set up a new computer w/Vista, and practically went crazy doing so. I find XP much easier to use.

Macintosh OS X 10.5.1 Leopard. I don't need to extrapolate.

However, between XP and Vista I would have to say that it would depend on what you're planning to do. XP has more programs and such and is better supported by peripheral devices. Vista is probably more advanced, though I wouldn't know. I would imagine that it has more bugs and problems that will be resolved over the next few years. XP is probably better right now, but Vista will surpass it soon.

vista...for example if you want to bring something home from a differnet version of microsoft word say 2003, and you have word 2007 on vista then it will automatically let you download it no problem...xp won't.

Mac OS X Leopard.

It's more secure than vista and xp put together and has the same properties as Linux...plus, you can put XP in it and run both Windows and XP at the same time you're running Mac.

If I had to choose between the two, it would be XP.

If you havn't noticed, 70% of businesses will NOT upgrade to Vista.

Vista is not essential. It's slower, bulkier...."oooooo, nice graphics.."..psh, I can get those same piece of sh.it graphics on XP...
