Luke 8:2 says that seven demons came out of Mary Magdalene.

Why did they come out of her? Did Jesus expel them?

This reference was probably speaking about parasites. Parasites were a huge problem in Jesus's day and they made people very ill. They were often referred to as demons because people had no knowledge of internal medicine.

Illness being caused by demons was a logical assumption to these people. Jesus was a well known healer in his day because he had knowledge of eastern medical practices. This is well documented in scripture that was not included in the bible.

When he used these practices on the people of Galilee they were astonished and referred to these healings as miracles. Something as simple as purging someone of a tape worm was seen as a miracle, and thought of as exorcising demons. If you ever saw a tape worm up close and personal you would see why someone would feel this way about them. They are hideous.

Later people who were unaware of this, misinterpreted these stories and took them at face value. This led to confusion and literal interpretations that persist to this very day.

Yes, He did. He is Lord of all and that includes demons. They must obey His commands! Jesus sets people free! He loves to do that! Having a demon is worse than dying!
