So many of the ways in which we observe Christmas are inherently unChristian, aren't they?

We give lavish gifts to our families and friends, silently confident that they will give to us, forgetting those who cannot or will not return our generosity. We make some token gesturs to the poor, but its really all about giving to our own small nuclear family or group, and also about receiving.

Is this Christianity?

I'm all for CELEBRATING Christmas. We should have a party. Its Jesus' birthday! But the party is to be for all humankind.

Instead, we just have all sorts of hedonistic rituals. And we let consumerism and greed enter into every part of Christmas.

Yes. Real giving is expecting nothing in return.

The whole idea of these christmas gifts is ridiculous. The Bible doesn't mention christmas therefore it is not a sin to not give gifts. We have lost sight of the fact that JESUS didn't come for the gifts. He came to be the gift. There is a great article about this in the forums at my source. It makes you think.

GOD loves you even when you don't love Him!

I wouldn't exactly call it sinful - maybe selfish. But I think a lot of Christmas "traditions" have become self-centered and in bad taste. It's good to give and it's good to receive. Moderation and balance are important factors to keep in mind. I completely agree with you regarding consumerism and greed!

Since we are not related you can hand over all your money to me and expect nothing in return if that makes you happy. In return I will tell the big guy in the sky what you did for me.

Oh, sorry, we've supposed to be talking about sin.

Is is original sin you want to talk about or non original sin?

None of this makes any sense.

Giving to only those who you know will give back is being selfish, and yes selfishness is a sin, remember what Jesus said: "Whatever you have done for the least of your brothers, you have done for me." Merry CHRISTmas.

Maybe you feel that way. I do not. I give to whoever I feel like giving to without hope of getting anything in return.
By the way you are talking from both sides of your mouth. Yes with a but.

I don't think these Christmastime rituals are bad. I like getting gifts and if that makes me greedy, then I guess I'll be making out with Satan in hell for all eternity.

Sinful? No. Selfish, though.
