I have a stopover flight in NY (JFK) on the 13th of January during the day, and I have 5 hours to spare. I want to know where I can leave my suitcases and go shopping to a nearby mall (near JFK). Any suggestions?

Near JFK, I would see about catching a cab to the Roosevelt field mall. That's probably the closest, most convenient mall to JFK.

Its about a 30 minute ride each way.

Five hours isn't much. There's a mall at Queens Center, and actually, Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream might end up being the easiest to get to from JFK, but it's almost silly to go to a mall, when you surely have malls near where you live. There's nothing "New York" about them, you know? And, really, I wouldn't take the chance. By the time you get out of the airport and get to a mall, you'll have to go right back so you don't miss your connection. As for your bags, won't they just be checked through to your connecting flight?
Roosevelt Field is NOT the closest to JFK. Don't even try that.

You're really cutting it close... by the time you make it into the city or Roosevelt Field Mall (30 minutes AT THE VERY LEAST) and factor in return time (30 minutes) plus the fact that you need to get the airport around (Two hours) early... you'll be left with two hours of shopping...and I highly doubt you'll even get that much in... plus, what are you doing with the stuff that you buy? I don't know of any place where you can leave your luggage either. Just get a book and relax in the airport
