The common sense answer would be to use a can opener, but the blade is too short to reach the top of the can because it wasn't made for a can opener.

Tried it. The thinnest knives won't even fit underneath :(

Use a pair of needle nose pliers to grab the rivet and lever it up - if you have them. Or ue an old fashioned 'church key' can opener to force the tab down.

Or use a thin blunt object and place the tip on the tab, and tap it with a hammer-like thingy to force it down into the can (wipe the top clean first).
- a screwdriver, table knife, wooden spoon, car key, etc will work for the blunt object, and the hammer-thingy could be a pan, heavy mug, heavy spoon, book, whatever you have.

Provided the action on your guitar is ok then it rather sounds like you aren't fretting the notes accurately. You should be pressing down the string(s) immediately behind the fret. If you press down any further back you run the risk of "buzzing". Stretching from the 2nd to the 5th fret easily comes with practice and if you are fretting properly then you gain that little bit extra length even if you have small hands.

I'd use the end of a wooden spoon or a screw driver to bend the tab part that broke off. This should get your can open without you getting hurt in the process.

Take a butter knife and try to pry it open from the part where the pull tab would have puncutured the lid. GOOD LUCk, don't hurt yourself.

ok you have to be really carefull, but it has happened to be several times, and it is kinda dangerious so be very very carefull. i take a knife (thick heavy knife with a serrated edge) and push it down into the can cutting the can, and push it up and down in a sawing motion and at the same time force it to go to one side and you can manually cut the can open. but the metal can cut you badly, so really BE CAREFULL!!!
