Last night I came home and I found that my terrier mix 3 year old had thrown up her food, a large amount of partly digested dog food smelling paste. I found her water dish empty and imediately after filling it she slopped a ton up, I had to make her take breaks in drinking to make her slow down. The I took her out and she had a tiny amount of poop and a long pee. She is lethargic and only got mildly excited about a treat I got out. The only things I can think she may have eaten is horse hoof shavings (from barn) and maybe some hairspray was used in the area around her food dish. She hasn't thrown up since and she's just sleeping alot now, should I wait to see if she improves or call a vet?

update, I called the vet. We were on our way but all the way to the car she seemed to perk up and act more normal, so I called the vet back and they suggested that I keep an eye on her but since she's willing to eat that I should give her chicken and white rice. Hopefully this is just a passing tummy ache. Thanks for all the quick responses!!

It wouldn't hurt to call the vet, but really, as long as she is drinking water and eating some, she probably is OK.
If she stops eating and drinking, it would be an emergency.
Sometimes when dogs eat something that does not agree with them, they will have these symptoms.
Don't use hairspray around her food or water dish. It's toxic.

If she is holding down her water fine it does not sound like a foreign body. usually with foreign bodies they cannot hold down food or water. If you cannot get her to vet right away just put ice cubes in dish so she doesnt take in so much water (too much can make her nauseated). Doctor will probably want to run blood work to check for pancreatitis ( eating something that didnt agree with her ) or for possible renal problems). Think if you have had any rat bait or any type of poison laying around. I would get to dr if conditions persisted or get worse.

Many dogs have a hard time digesting horse hoof trimmings and if they have gotten larger pieces they will vomit them back up with food. Most times it poses no huge problem other than the mess they make.
Mine pick up trimmings any time they can find them. we try to get them all up but once and awhile they get into them.
Sometimes we see them vomit most times not.
They do however seem to consume larger amounts of water after chewing on them or rawhide bones. It must make them thirsty.
Of you do acts strange at all for more than one day a trip to the vet might be in order just watch her close and make shure she is ok.

It would be safe to go to the vet. I understand the stress you are having. Wondering if it was something she ate. Is she sick? Is her life in danger? And if i go to the vet and she is fine i just wasted my money. Even if she is okay and you take her to the vet it would be better than her dying because you did not take her to the vet. Hope your terrier is feeling alright.

Call your vet. Do not give your dog anything (medicine, Propel, etc.) without first contacting your vet. You may or may not need to actually take your dog in, but at least call.

My dog did this and I went and got him some propel it has antioxidents in it to help her fight whatever kind of thing she is fighting always make sure her nose is cold though if it's hot you should take her to the vet. Propel is appropriate for dogs my vet told me to go get some there aren't to many dog store that sell that kind of water. Propel is low in sugar.

If this were happening to your child, would you wait or take him/her to a doctor?
At least CALL your vet and ask them what you should do. Phone calls are FREE.
