I've noticed that some brands of water are offering new environmentally friendly designs. Poland Springs, Deer Park, etc. How are these new designs any different than the old water bottle?

No, they are marketing schemes. Some shapes are more efficient than others, but in the end the amount plastic used determines the amount of carbon emitted. The only real solution is to fill the same bottle with tap water over and over. I have used some of the same bottles for years.

a good amount of bottled water companies are using thinner bottles, which means less plastic per bottle and more bottles per ton of plastic, the down side of this is that the bottles are more likely to break when you drop them... i've seen this happen with the thinner ozarka bottles

Less plastic involved in making them..they are very narrow in the middle.

Maybe they contain less plastic than the previous ones.
