Even on a Saturday night you are lucky to get a half hour extension. Im not talking about binge drinking teenagers falling out of pubs, but middle aged people who like to meet friends and have a few beers, if you work late in the evening you have no chance to go anywhere, or you go out and are just getting cosy and you have to leave.

Not all pubs have applied for a 24 hour licence. They do need a licence to open 24 hours.

Because it's only become LEGAL to open 24 hours, this doesn't mean that all pubs will be open 24 hours, it just means that if they want to they can. It's up to the owner as to when they chuck out and it's likely that most pubs just didn't bother changing opening / closing times.

Each individual outlet applies to the local licensing authority for the opening hours that they want. They can, if it is deemed good business sense, apply for a 24hr licence. Most businesses have looked at the pros and cons for 24hr opening and have decided to stay reasonably close to the old opening times. In most areas there is usually a bar somewhere that stays open late but, as you can imagine, there is not much trade in the early hours of the morning, so there won't be many places open!

Possibly because us bar staff have homes to go to and want social lives of our own? If the pub I work at (a wetherspoons) opened 24hrs-there would be extra wages to pay, heating, lighting bills would go up,insuarance, etc and therefore the price of the beer may go up to help cover the extra costs-would the drinkers want that?
Also I don't think some peeps realise how much work goes into bar work-it's not pulling pints-we have a lot of unseen work to do too. Also it's not just the bar staff/management it would affect-its the delivery guys from the breweries too-extra deliveries for them-it'd make a lot of extra hours for a lot of people who would like to have a day/night off just sometimes

Publicans need to apply for an extended licence, they rarely get refused but the publican has to consider the extra cost of opening for longer, they have to pay staff to stay on there is the extra cost of heating, lighting and other things. This has to be balanced against possible income from drinkers staying on or other drinkers coming in. Sometimes it's just not a viable option.

The advantage of the 24 hour licence is being reaped by the supermarkets not pubs and clubs.

Hey they wprk too.. They want to get home as well to their families. Why should people be up half the night to serve you. Go somewhere other than pubs then,, My local snooker hall has a nice bar and is open till 2am.. you have to be a member, but don't have to play snooker.
