Because it is easier to adopt an animal. I have a cousin that has tried numberous times to adopt since she has been unable to have kids of her own. The cost was far more than she could afford. The interview process was unreal.
But they could give her niece and nephew back to their crack head parents. She wasn't even able to adopt her niece and nephew. The system here is messed up. Church goers or not, the stable people are treated like criminals or like they have the black plaque. The criminals are given chance after chance. Go figure.

It takes 6 minutes 23 seconds to adopt a dog or a cat and costs anywhere from free to $50 depending on the place that you adopt the animal.
It takes 18 - 24 months to adopt a child and costs anywhere from $10,000 to $50,000 just to have the chance to adopt a child.
The laws of the United States are in place to stop child trafficking, yet, it ends up prohibiting many good people from adopting and loving children.
Another goofy law in the US. A pregnant single woman went to the adoption agency to put her unborn child up for adoption. They found a family to adopt the baby and the couple paid for all the medical bills (including the prenatal exams, the medicines, the delivery, etc.) After the child was born the natural mother decided not to give the baby up for adoption and the courts told the couple that even though they paid for everything and had a written contract, the birth mother always has the right of refusal. As if the child was an object to be sold, not a child to be loved. That couple is out thousands of dollars, and legal fees for attempting to sue to recover the money spent.

Q -- "Why do Americans adopt more dogs and cats than orphans?"
A -- Most dogs and cats don't cost hundreds of thousands of dollars over the first 18 years. No more kids for me. I'll stick with my cats, and my dog, "Muhammad." (Named after the prophet. Only to spite the extremists in Sudan who wanted to have a Brit teacher executed for naming a teddy bear that... after a student!)
To Cheryl E. -- I wish there were a LOT more women like YOU out and about. You are very sensible!!

I find cats and dogs more reasonable than children, which is why I never had any biological children of my own. If I was unwilling to become a "natural" mother, there's no reason (and lots of reasons NOT) to adopt a child. Not every woman is cut out for motherhood.

Because there are more dogs and cats to adopt in America. If you think that Christians are not willing to adopt you must live in a hole. I have friends that have been waiting to adopt for almost a year now.

Because the adoption process in the U.S. is too long. It takes years. You can have your cat or dog the same day.

What does religion have to do with adopting orphans? Mostly because it's costly and most Americans can't afford it unless they adopt a special needs child, and a special needs child needs to be in a home that can provide the special needs. Furthermore, where did you get your statistics? I doubt them.

Less orphans available and only certain people are qualified to raise orphans.
What about other countries?

People can have kids by themselves without adoption. I don't know any people that would randomly procreate to produce a dog or cat.

because orphan from the not developped regions of the world would remind them that they are the one who exploit the poor people because they are unfortunately one of the leading nations in the world and that would be too harsch to stand. when you come at home, at your fire, you don't want someone to remind you how evil you are and you prefer a dog who licks your hands whatever you do.
