go to craigslist.com and look for short term/sublets for apartments or just rooms. you dont have to live in Manhattan - Brooklyn and Queens are cheaper and there is public transportation going everywhere. (new yorkers spend an average of at least an hour getting to work)

The previous respondents are certainly correct: It will be very difficult to find a place in Manhattan for less than $1,500.

If you can be a little creative, however, you CAN stay in New York and beat your price-point.

First, branch out to the other boroughs, as has been suggested. But also check online services like Craigslist for "shares" . . . the majority are looking for full-time roommates, but you can find people that will be willing to take you on short-term.

Another possibility is a services-for-housing exchange. Typically this will involve housekeeping responsibilities or the like; which might not be to your taste, but could result in a free room.

Finally, if you have a house or apartment elsewhere, you might be able to "swap" for New York pad. Lots of New Yorkers do this (I did it a number of times), and it doesn't cost a thing.

New York is crazily expensive, but it's important to remember that not all New Yorkers are rich. As such, many, many Manhattanites get very creative in terms of how they pay for their space. All you need to do is piggy-back off their ideas.

Good luck, and enjoy the Big Apple!
