That is exactly the reason. It gets everywhere. So, a few careless students ruin it for everyone.

In our district, the sole reason is cleanness. People stick it on the walls and desks, and spit it on the floors. In our Jr High school, which is only 3 years old, you're absolutely forbidden to chew gum, but in our 20 year old high school, most teachers don't care since the school is already trashed up.

It's awful to scrape up off the floor, and it's disgusting to find it stuck under desks, off the bottom of trashcans, etc. There are very few things more annoying than stepping on a piece of "fresh" gum that sticks to the bottom of your shoes. ICK! Plus, very few people look attractive while chewing gum -- most tend to go slack-jaw and cud-chewing when they are chewing on gum, and teachers get grossed out looking over a sea of chomping mouths.
Besides, chewing gum is low-rent.

We are allowed to chew gum in my school but if the teachers/janitors find it all over then they take it away. There is nothing more disgusting than finding a chewed up piece of gum under your desk.

our school banned gum too, and people have a gum scraping duty when they catch those people.
* can distract others
* makes a huge sticky mess all if popped
* if someone sticks it on peoples hair, they'd be in trouble and the person would have to cut that part of the hair if they can't get it out
* lots of people put gum on chairs and tables
* it can also be swallowed or choke someone..somebody almost choked on it and got in trouble still for chewing it in P.E. (but who chews gum in p.e...right?), and if anything really serious were to happen, the parents would go mad and you know the rest of the story.

There are actually several reasons. It can be annoying for people to be snapping and popping and blowing bubbles in the class room. Its also something that is not always disposed of cleanly. If it is not wrapped up it gets stuck in the trash can, it might be stuck under desks or chairs or it may be spit on the floor for others to step in.

Well, among the obvious reasons, ie-gum under desks or chairs, blowing bubbles...there is also loud smacking. Now THAT is truly annoying and how on earth could anyone teach or concentrate in that environment?

Your theory is correct! They don't want students sticking the gum on the furniture.

They stick it everywhere! Thats why its not allowed at times. At my work ppl get gum on the floor. Only way to get it off is to take hot boiling water and pour over it, then use a putty knife to scrape it up.
