About 6 years ago I started suffering from bad swelling in my hands and feet. It could happen very suddenly and could last upto 6 hours. Then it would dissapear at quickly as it came. The swelling is red and feels like an itchy burn. The worst instance was when my index finger expanded to twice its size. My doctor could not diagnose it.
It hasn't happened for a few years now but its recently started again, all be it not as bad as it used to be. It seems to happen when the weather gets a little colder.

Has anybody got any idea what could be causing this???

Could it be Chilblains? They occur when you rapidly heat up your skin after being out in the cold too long. People suffered from it quite a lot in olden days, like when I was a child you would get them on your toes and fingers when you put your hands and feet in front of the open fire after being out in the snow. Itchy red swollen and sore are the typical signs. Keep your hands warm when out.

The water soaks into your skin and makes it expand. There are points where the skin is connected to the underlying tissue (the superficial fascia) and the skin stays "tacked" or connected here. The result is a wrinkly look. Skin on other parts of your body is thicker, so it takes longer to get saturated, but if you stayed in water long enough, your whole body would get wrinkled.

Have you had your blood pressure checked? Also try limiting your salt intake. Not sure if it will help but swelling often occurs with water retention and salt makes that worse.
