You become a dirt track racer by racing on dirt. Simple as that. if you really want to race, go find a car and run it.
As far as age goes, that varies from state to state, track to track. Around here, they let kids as young as 14 run in the Hornets, which are those 4-cylender entry level cars. If you get into karting, you can run even younger, like about 5 in quarter midgets.

It depends on the track and the sanctioning body. Some tracks don't have an age limit and many 13 or 14 year olds race in the lower divisions. Only one way to get started as a driver. Buy, find, build a car, tow it to the track, and go racing. It is a good idea to go to a racing school, but go to a real one like Skip Barber or Bob Bondurant. Some schools just let you ride around in a race car without ever really teaching you anything.

Go to your local Dirt track and get the rules of AGE and Rules of the Class You want to race in. Then buy a used Race car and learn in it. Much cheaper than building your own. Plus if you buy one at the local track say at the end of the season--It will already be approved by those local track Rules and set up somewhat!!!! 1 track I run at you have to be 16 to run in the Street Stock Class!!!!

You can run quarter midgets on dirt or asphalt from age 5-15. My kids are 9 & 6 and both race & they love it. Some of their friends who have "retired" are moving up into 600 cc's/slingshots/etc.
To find out more about the sport or if there is a track near you:

Well at the 5/8 mile oval in Birmingham the "Renagade "Champion for 2007 was aa 11 year old.
But most tracks if you are 16 they have a rookie or renagade or streetstock division.Contact your local track for the info on that track.
Also th 11 year olds father won the modified championship.
