People are pretty critical and even judgemental of other based on their "typing etiquette". I find this odd as this is an informal forum where the use of emoticons and terms such as "lol" and "imao" and even abbreviations you would never use at school or work are so commonplace here. Seems a bit hypocritical, no?

In the computer "chat" world, using all caps is considered to be yelling.... it is a means of placing emphasis which normal typing/writing does not have on it... like the difference between saying:

"Chuck, come here."
and
"CHUCK, COME HERE."

In polite parlance, when one calls for Chuck's presence, it is polite NOT to yell. A lady, or proper gentleman, need only turn their heads and say quietly, "Chuck, come here" for the proper response to be obtained, "Coming, mother," followed by the quiet pitter-pat of feet from down the hallway.

People who are more... um... "coarse" in their behavior will YELL...

"CHUCK, COME HERE."

with the appropriate reply, "YEAH, OKAY!" followed by the loud, heavy-footed thumping of the son's footfalls.

While there are appropriate times when yelling is called for, such as Fido from down the block, "FIDO, COME!" in most computer chatting circumstances, yelling is frowned upon in polite exchanges.

Normally, a conversation over a delightful cup of tea does not sound like this, "spoken" at a peak decibel level:

"NATALIE... I HEAR YOUR DAUGHTER'S FIANCE IS A VERY HANDSOME LAD!!!!"

"WHY, THANK YOU, MARILYN, WHAT A KIND THING TO SAY!!! GEORGE AND I COULDN'T BE MORE PLEASED WITH SISSY'S CHOICE OF MATES!!!"

"YOU SHOULD BE PROUD, MY DEAR!!!!"

.... and so on. I guess the only time such lung power is necessary is when the gardener happens to be mowing the lawn at the same time you are enjoying your tea. But then, a proper gardener should also be on HIS tea break, too!

Have a polite day.... or should that be, "HAVE A POLITE DAY!!!"

It definitely comes across as you are yelling and I find it rude. Whenever I get an email from a customer in all caps, it's extremely irritating.

well, as you probably know, caps signify yelling. I use caps for emphasis, but typing an entire reply to someone in all caps is not good etiquette.

When you reading a message you can misunderstand a person's intent.

No, they think you're really angry or something and want to draw attention because you need help, and when they open the question, and you're just talking about something casual, they get annoyed.

It looks like your talking loud or trying to get a point across.

Yes, there is something wrong - you are yelling, and we want to know why? Also, it's painful to read sometimes, especially when everyone else is using proper type... SO STOP IT!

Yes, it's irritating and it's also considered to be "shouting" on the internet. It's just rude, and it's just as easy to write in lowercase.
