How can anyone think that still????? What do people think these dogs do the rest of the time??? Are they aware that they spend like three minutes in the ring????????

How is that cruel and un-natural?????????????

In my opinion, most dogs that show are better socialized around people and other dogs than most!!!!! And clearly, they like it or they would not be going around the ring with their heads up and getting all excited when they are getting ready to go.

Clearly, PETA wants us to vaporize all the living creatures on the planet. We cannot do anything else with them!!!!!!!

I don't see how showing down grades pets. I have owned dogs htat were pets...they did do working events. I have produced many pet quality dogs. They happen in most litters. They all had some fault that would eliminate them from a breeding program. If we breed the dogs with the LEAST faults, we will get better puppies. Showing finds the dogs that should be part of a breeding program.

And people who show professionally are HANDLERS. Yes, it is their profession. What is wrong with that. They take your dog into the ring for the three minutes that they need to. So what? There are proesssional groomers too. But saying dogs showing is UN-NATURAL is kinda of an elitest attitude right there!!!!! Our dogs are treated worse because they go to shows? We are all snobs because we have the $$ to show??? We are all know-it-alls???? Why all these issues with people that want to breed the best dogs they can??

Does evey "hobby" have to be affordable for everyone??? My friend flys. That is a hobby I cannot afford.
I sometimes do not choose to show, but to prove a good dog from a mediocre one, you HAVE to. Otherwise what defines a good breeding dog. One with a heartbeat?????? Sorry, showing, reading, being "in" dogs, not asking for advice here....all that DOES make me more knowledgable than MOST.

And anyone that comes HERE for breeding help IS NOT a good breeder!!!
And probably never will be!!!!

If people cannot afford the health clearances, which can be quite expensive, should they still breed too???
Should that stop them from being a good breeder?????

2007-12-16 06:54:40 · update #5

Really, there is help available for feeling that all breeders and show people are "out to get you"!!!!! What paranoia!!

If you want to go towards the "basic free range dog" idea, go for it. Some of us what dog that look and can do certain things. That might not be for everyone, so to each his own. But when you breed UNHEALTHY dogs, who are doing the favor to???? Health clearances are costly because vet care in general is. Not my fault, and I agree it IS costly. Should that prevent me from doing health clerances??? Should we all just stick our heads in the sand and say, "he look healthy". That is what breeders did years and years ago beofre the ability to screen.. Hip dysplaisa was around LONG ago, and will be long from now, but screening for diseases is what responsible people do. Does that mean we are all abd uncaring people?? Guess you think so. Guess you have had some BAD experiences. Whatever. Maybe you cannot afford a dog and feel gulity about that.

Not everyone should own a dog. Some just CANNOT afford to give proper care.

What? You mean shows dogs aren't locked up in a dark closet when they aren't being shown?

People should really go to a dog show sometime and actually talk to the people there. Most of them are quite friendly, and love talking about their dogs.

When dogs aren't in a ring, they are usually being spoiled rotten.

Bring on the TD's. Nope, I think people do need to mind their own business though. It's understandable that people are angry at irresponsible breeders but why should we all be punished for other peoples stupidity (plus just like most other things made mandatory there will be people that break the rules). Not everybody is incapable of handling a dog that hasn't been fixed. Other then stopping the dogs from being able to breed and bringing down the chance of testicular cancer there is NO other benefits to spaying and neutering a dog. Read updated medical reports and studies though somethings are brought up by only .4% many other health issues are brought up significantly higher after a dog is altered. As for behavior issues that is mostly due to training or lack of, the only time spaying/neutering showed in what they think is a slight change in behavior is when it was done before the testes dropped and most vets will not do the procedure that young. Now as for the cat thing that is understandable if they are the kind of owners that let their cats roam, I say this because there is no law against people letting their cats run around but there are laws for dogs so obviously the cat breeding rate is higher.

Thanks to the show dog owners/ breeders I know more about what happens. But on the other hand I wish the same people would not talk down to us average dog owners. I wish that when a person is asking a question that these same people would not demean the person but that they would SHARE their knowledge. I wish "dogs" would become more of a sharing of knowledge than the debate that it has become. You against us so to speak. A person with a vast amount of knowledge could teach those with a new puppy alot of things, and with that make them a better dog owner. Merry Christmas to all!

People who know nothing about dog history and training think any kind of "job" or "purpose" for a dog is wrong. They do not realize that dogs love to have job to do and that the training needed for a champion dog keeps a dog active and stimulated and therefor a happier animal. Dogs who show are probably the best taken care of companion animals out there. I think the person who says this to you mistakes showing an animal for having an "accessory" pet like so many of the purse mutts out there or that dogs being judged on looks and breed standards is snobby.

These dogs are PETS first. If they were not worked with, socialized and trained, they would NOT behave so well in the ring! It takes alot of work just to get a dog to stack well! They have to allow the judge to touch them, check their bite, etc. They have to be able to tolerate being so close to other dogs.. and also ignore the other dogs... not always an easy task when you have unaltered dogs!

Many dogs gothru alot of work to be shown, and may finish in just a weekend or two.

Go ahead and try to get one of your pet dogs to stand still in front of you, let you place their feet where you want them.. and have some stranger come up and check inside their mouths and touch them.. without much reaction from the dog!

I show my Goldens but first and foremost they are family pets and live in our home. They are treated like Royalty and have a wonderful life. They are well exercised and well fed and I adore them all.

I show them because they are beautiful dogs and I enjoy the comradeship I find with the rest of the people I meet at Dog Shows.

Those people are ignorant. Dog shows are a way to help prove certain dogs have genetics good enough to pass on to future generations--it's a way to IMPROVE genetics, not to be cruel! Those people don't know what they're talking about. Owners of good show dogs CARE about their dogs to take the time and money to selectively breed them and show them.

Did you know PETA is anti-show dog? (Honestly, who is surprised? PETA is anti-EVERYTHING.) It says dogs were designed to chew shoes and sleep on the couch and not to be shown. Oh sure, PETA. I'm sure that's perfect. How else would we know which dogs have traits that should be passed down? Shows are a fun way for the dogs with best conformation to prove their excellence. Oh yes then again PETA is anti-breeding. (Sighs) What would the world be like if PETA had its way? No dogs, no cats, everyone forced into veganism...I shudder at the very thought.

BTW I'm not a breeder, nor do I show dogs...I am just not against showing/breeding the best dogs. We NEED reputable breeders to improve our dogs' health and genetics! Dog shows are a way reputable breeders show they CARE. I've seen a few dog shows, and honestly the dogs looked like they were enjoying themselves, enjoying the new sights and smells...how is this "torture"? PETA's likely response: "The handlers smack the dogs when they look unhappy. They force the dogs into looking like they're having a good time." Uh-huh. I'm SO sure that's proven by experienced judges, handlers, breeders...particularly as PETA is run by emotion!

Oh yeah--AND PETA wants all existing dogs to eat a vegan diet. PETA has come up with a lot of crazy things but the dogs-eating-vegan thing is insane. It fully approves of V-dog; I would only feed it if had one of those very, very rare dogs allergic to almost all meat products. I'm sure you all know dogs need meat to live well, right? My dog eats a diet containing a nice portion of meat in it. He would break out in allergies if I was to switch him to V-dog. (BTW it's full of corn and wheat and soy. Foreign to a dog's natural diet.)

Sorry, Natz, I didn't mean to give you a thumbs down. I meant a thumbs up! Just ignore the one I gave you.

Ista--either you interpret show dog people the wrong way, or there are very few of them. Occasionally professionals get irritable with the way inexperienced breeders behave and so act a little snappish; even then this number is low. For the most part, the show dog community is kind and compassionate and wants to help those who want to help them cultivate and improve dog breeds.

That's very odd.

You're totally right about the socialization thing--what could make a better pet than a dog who's around tons of people and other dogs so much?

My dog was going to a be a show dog with the breeder, but she held her tail too high and they thought that it would be detrimental to her score. So we got her and now she loves everyday with us, and us with her!

I really don't know! Our Cavalier is shown, yet he spends most days having a run in a muddy field, on the beach or another area some people believe show dogs would never go.

I've never known a dog that is shown that doesn't do all these things!
