VERY simple way... Go to Target and get an empty spray bottle, like the kind you use to mist plants or like is used in Kitchen Clenzers.

You find it in the isle with all of the little mini-sized travle soaps and lotions exc.

Fill it with water, set it to Stream, and whenever the cat goes where s/he isn't suposed to go spritz him in the face.

HE WILL HATE IT and eventually you won't even need to use the water at all... My cats freak whenever I make the "Sppzz" sound with my mouth...

It doesn't hurt them and it just tells them NO without any type of physical deturent or psycological scarring from screaming!

Works every time!

Use a water bottle to squirt it with every time you notice it is in the kitchen. Also, make sure to clean up ANY food or liquids you use right after you are done. That way, the cat really has no reason to be there other than it is simply exploring the areas. If your kitchen is a walk through to other parts of the house, even if it is only one other room such as a good sized walk in cabnit, the cat will still try to get in there no matter what. Another thing you can do is pick the cat up by the scruff of its neck, this is what mother cats do to their young, and place them outside of the kitchen. The scruff is an area of extra skin and fur right behind the neck and at the top of the shoulders. It does NOT hurt them to do thing, unless of course you grab them roughly or twist them hard. Imagine that happening to you and you will know the natural limits.

Despite what some people say, cats CAN be trained. It takes a lot more then dogs though. You need to have a consistent punishment as well as a consistent REWARD for when you notice they do what you want them to do. That way, they can equate both good and bad things with whatever they do.

Above all, just be consistent and patient!

Whenever s(he) goes up onto the kitchen side, tell him 'No, get down' in a firm, but not shouting, voice, and put him on the floor. Each time he does this, just repeat the same words and make sure he gets down. Make him go out of the kitchen and if poss, shut the kitchen door. After a while you will only need to say his name or enter the kitchen and he will jump down because by then he will know that he shouldn't be up there. Eventually he will stop trying to get up there but you do need to be patient and persevere.

You could also try a small spray with a water pistol but make sure you spray at his body and not his face so as not to hurt his eyes.
Good luck.

I've tried the spray bottle and I had one cat that learned to like water because he got sprayed so much. He got so bad about it that he would jump in the shower or tub with you. Another one of our cats - it worked as long as you were standing there with the spray bottle threatening to spray him.

For some reason my male cats seemed to be more stubborn and insisted on claiming the whole house as their territory. My female cats don't seem to care.

I have just lost both of my male cats this year. My 19 year old Cisco died in July and my 10 year old Charley just died on my birthday 11/28 from diabetes. Now I am left with 4 female cats.

Sorry about running on.

Hi Cheryl...cats are instinctively curious and to better train them we need to provide an environment that is mentally stimulating for them.

To prevent counter top surfing consider using double-side sticky tape as cats dislike having their paws stuck to the tape and soon learn to avoid areas that are unpleasant, which is more beneficial than a water bottle squirt since you can't always be there to supervise your cat.

Additionally, if there are food, dirty dishes on the counters while you are away, it's important to clear off the counters and wash dishes when you are training your cat.

Water bottles are good if you can catch them in the act but when your back it turned or you are not at home, double sided tape is a great way. It may inconvienence you for a bit but they will jump up and hate the stickiness on their feet and jump down. They will do this a couple times and learn it is a no-go place.
