My husband has just developed shingles and the doctor told him my son could catch chicken pox or shingles from him. My son is three years old. He is not vaccinated for Chicken Pox. How long is the incubation period...when can I expect him to come down with it if he is going to get it?

yes. He can catch chicken pox. incubation period 2 to 3 weeks, infectious for about a day before the rash appears and then for a further 5 days.
Shingles is caused by a reactivation of the chicken pox virus so he won't develop that now, but could at some point in the future if he's unlucky like your husband.

Incubation for chicken pox is 14 days; in addition, your husband was contagious prior to the physical outbreak.

It is droplet transmission; your child is most likely going to get it. Keep him hydrated, don't let him scratch at the vesicles (increases risk of bacterial infection) and keep him away from other children. He is going to not feel good for a while.

Def. have the doctor look at him when he gets sick. Do not give him aspirin -- aspirin should be avoided in children with chicken pox as there is a possible link between it and Reye's syndrome. (Actually, aspirin isn't really good in kids anyways)

Yes this is the perfect way for a child to get chicken pox. They say with 5 children in a room, and 1 has chicken pox, there's a 90% chance that all the other 4 kids will get it as well. I would def send my child to a chicken pox party so they can get it over and done with. if your child doesn't get it before the age of 7 - 10, and they get it later, it will cause immense pain and can last for ages, if it happens in their 40's, they can die. so SEND YOUR KID TO THAT CHICKEN POX PARTY! consult your doctor for professional help and advice always :) hope this helps :)

Chances are your son is going to get it if he's in the house with your husband. It could happen while your husband is still suffering from the shingles, or it could happen a little bit after your husband has recovered.

Some people including myself will tell you that exposing your son to the chicken pox at such a young age is actually better, he'll get them and hopefully be done with them at a young enough age that it won't hinder his attendance at school, or increase his chances of shingles.

Hope this helps.

Both are caused by the varicella-zoster virus. Your husband is contagious as long as the blisters are present. Incubation period (time from exposure to onset of disease) for chicken pox is about 2 weeks.

It's the same virus. So you can get chickenpox from shingles (called Herpes Zoster).
Incubation is one week to 12 days.

When your husband is about to recover, that is the time anyone can be infected. So, get your son vaccinated.
