There are no secrets............
It's more a matter of being in the right place at the right time.
To maximize your chances of being in the right place at the right time you MUST GET OUT THERE AND STAY OUT THERE.

What I do normally is determining what companies I would like to work for. This can be done easily by checking the market and business strength or by being part of that market. Ask around as well about the best companies in terms of business deveoplment or financial strength, management practice,..etc. Then check the career section of these companies (website pages) regularly since many jobs do not find their way to the job boards. Apply to these jobs if you are interested. Check the job boards like Monster and Career builder. Try to avoid recruiters as much as you can unless you are looking for temporary jobs. MANY recruiters are NOT professional and I have seen people sending the candidates resumes by faxing them to the human resources department with a cover letter inculding your name (which should not be like that). MANY Recruiters will claim that they know the manager or some insiders but MOST know only nothing than the name of the human resources representative and will call to ask if there is any opening.
Networking also is an option. If you know someone who knows someone this can be very powerful. With your age, summer jobs in these companies can be a great advantage since you build some relations with future employees.
Good luck.

Networking. You have to network. It's really the only good way to find unadvertised job opportunities. See if your local Chamber of Commerce or any other local organizations have any networking events coming up. I live in a big city and there are networking mixers here ALL the time!

Its all about networking, you need to know people who know people. Most unadvertised Job Opportunitys come by word of mouth.

Decide which companies you want to work for. Research them. Find the names of managers and executives who work there. Ask your friends and family for names and help. Someone always knows someone who knows someone.... Write these people letters ask for help or for a job.
But also watch Monster and Career Builder....
