Well, this is a very good question.
My family used to be so poor that we don't have any money left and we have to sell everything (even old clothes) in order to survive...
Life is just so damn cruel, no?
Haha.
But I finally decided that the most important thing is love when money doesn't rule anymore.

I would say materialism is the most wide spread religion. Many people who call themselves Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Atheists, or others do actually worship the all mighty dollar more than anything!

It depends on how you define religion.
"It is apparent that religion can be seen as a theological, philosophical, anthropological, sociological, and psychological phenomenon of human kind. To limit religion to only one of these categories is to miss its multifaceted nature and lose out on the complete definition" (see website below)
If money is the focus of one's sociological, philosophical, psychological and anthropological world, then, yes, it could be.
However, I can't see how one could fit money into theology.

Not a "religion," but definitely an idol that is worshiped by many people.

Y E S, for some people money is their religion.
They don't know that money does hot buy happiness or love! They may think so, but they are only deceiving themselves.

religious institutions DO rely on money but it is not what religion is about. It is about controlling people's actions and controlling their thoughts.
