People think that AI is hard and in the future. But its not. Its not hard. Its been done many times. Its present in auto-pilot, language recognition software, installation programs, automated factories. Even in vending machines and streetlights. AI is simply making the right choices. Its the "intelligent" part that throws people.
The best example is in games. People often complain that the AI sucks but what they really want is AH (artificially human). Going from one spot on a map to another is easy for an AI. Its a straight line, go around the obstacles. But if that is your opponent in a game then players quickly exploit it. What they WANT is for it to maybe choose straight line, or flanking movement, or a fake direct action with a move up the side, or sneak around the back for a rear attack, and even a small random chance of a totally stupid action except that sometimes it might work because you didnt expect it.
Most AI applications do not need to come close to being human. They only need to know the intelligent choices and pick the best one without picking a stupid one. For AH projects (art, music, games, anything creative) its kindof a giggle to AI programmers that to get close to human you need to dump more and more of the "intelligent" part and work with more and more randoms.

A robot only can do what it already knows how to do. Your Roombot will only vacuum the room. If it had artificial intelligence, it would learn. Do something else. See a need and fill it. Maybe it would feed the cat without being told. The key to intelligence is the ability to learn and reason.
I believe the closest we have come is in Adaptive Knowledge-based systems, where the knowledge of a skilled person is mimicked by a system that can also change the rules if the situation changes. An automatic driver that learned that things are different in the snow and changed its behavior in response to the existing situation. That sort of thing has been done in automatic process controls for some time now.

Man-created intelligence as opposed to naturally or God-created intelligence.
It is still only a concept, many of the technologies we have created appear to be able to 'think'. However this is usually just some genius programming installed in the machines to say 'when this happens; you do this'.
Think of the Lexus car that can park itself.
To an outside observer, it would seem that this machine is more intelligent than the person driving it because it can perform a parallel park on it's own (while the driver cannot?). However the car is not actually 'intelligent'. It is merely programmed to perform steering operations when a button is pushed.
In the movies, the idea that a machine could become so complex that it becomes 'self aware' (intelligent) is fuel for many wonderful 'man-against-the-machine' battles. (I Robot)
It is generally accepted that the difference between man's intelligence and a machines is that man has more creativity and 'will to live'.

artificial intelligence is just that --- how more blunt do you have to get?
it is intelligence that is artificial -- IE, manually created. IE -- robots and electronics that can perform certain duties/tasks/thought processes without being specifically told or manually done or computed.
IE -- your self-updating satellite linked clocks that dont need to be reprogrammed for daylight savings time and the like is a form of artificial intelligence, because is does a function that humans usually tend to automatically without being instructed to do so, or manually programmed to do so.
things of that nature

Artificial intellligence is where something that has no real life can think for itself, much like Sunny from I-Robot.
