these Bible-fundamentalists think that if other people understand the Bible differently from the way they do, those people are automatically wrong and are hell-bound for being wrong. are they saying they are the authority when it comes to "truth"? isn't that arrogance?

The way I understand this is that the same holds true for all belief systems. I have seen some pretty arrogant atheists. I will also admit to have known some arrogant Christians. I have never told another person that they are going to hell because it is not my place to Judge. That is for God and God alone. I also will not allow, anyone else to Judge me as stupid, arrogant, or wrong. You know what you know and I know what I know. Let's leave it at that. Have a nice day!

There is two ways to interpet the Bible. The right way and the wrong way. And if you would STUDY the Bible as it was the most important book you ever picked up you would understand this yourself. Most members of my Indendepent Fundamental Baptist church are not a arrogant, not prideful, but caring, thoughtful and generous. They would be the perfect neighbor( that is until you found out they were "fundamental" then you would hate them. Who is wrong? By the way fundamental, means serving as an orginal or generating source. AND of and or relating to essential structure, facts or function. Now apply these principles to your Bible study and your walk with God.
Fundamentalist break down Bible verses until the meaning is clear. Until there is no other way to interpet it. "Jesus wept".(John 11:35). This does not mean Jesus shed a single tear. Weeping means to show deep sorrow, usually with the shedding of tears. There is no other way to interpet this than to say Jesus was very sad at the death of His friend, Lazarus.
Now when you understand the Bible as well and deeply as a "Fundie" you can say you know the truth. Whois arrogant now? The one who knows what he/she is talking about or the one who does not like what is being said?

Total arrogance. I love being an atheist and quoting the Bible word for word, using the generally accepted definitions of the words and being told that the passage means something different and that I could not possibly know how to interpret something because I am an atheist. The only problem is that I went through RC school to grade 12, studying the Bible, etc. So I have a really good grasp of the Bible having read it numerous times. But there are the people out there who think that because you are not part of their religion, etc that you could not ever know that the words "really" mean.

I am not a theist but it seems to me that if you believe the bible is the word of god then you would believe every last word... don't work on a sunday, kill those who commit adultery, sell your daughter into slavery etc. etc.
I think the fundamentalists understand it better than those moderates who like to pick and choose which bits they want to believe.
" Whoever curses father or mother shall be put to death. "

Wow even the fundamentalists won't do that!

I don't know about other people, but if I did not think I was right, I would be trying to find what is right.
I don't condemn people for not seeing the truth as I do.

It's conceit, the same way almost everyone thinks their beliefs are the only true one's. That includes Muslims, Jews, Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, and atheists. No one will know for absolutely certain till they die, then it will be a moot point.

well, isn't that the way it is?

I mean with people who think the bible is a total fabricated fairy tale?

So why should your liberal view of the subject be treated any differently, by the Bible-fundamentalists?
