Prior to birth we lived as spirit children of our Heavenly Father. To further our development he sent us to school (this earth) to gain a physical body and have experiences that would help us understand certain truths better. By experiencing competing ideas and people making both good and bad decisions, we can develop an appreciation for and a better understanding of the principles of happiness.
To illustrate, consider that I tell my children to love and serve each other. I hope they'll obey, but they will probably gain some insight into this principle of happiness as their love grows through service and as they see what happens when people don't do this.
Our Heavenly Father wants more than blind obedience. He would like nothing more than our complete happiness by gaining an appreciation for the principles that lead to it and helping others do the same.
There are some great videos at the following web site that go into the "point of life" in more detail.

The word "point" requires a plan or design or final goal. Natural processes such as mindless evolution do not have plans for you so the first answer is nonsense.
It's also nonsense to think that we can make our own point for why we came into existence.
If a point to life exists, then God exists and if God doesn't exist, life is purposeless, meaningless and pointless. All of our attempts to make our own point/meaning/purpose are just ways we have to make ourselves feel better.

actually, there is no "point" to life on earth. we make our own reality and are responsible for each decision we make, and the consequences of those decisions are how we learn to make others. what we do with what we learn is the point we must understand.

Many sages agree that it would have been better for the soul had we not been born at all - however, now that we are here we must make the most of it and do as many good deeds as possible.

Life is a sandbox. You do what you do, and see what the consequences are. It's all cause-and-effect.
