For example, If I was getting a surgical removal of xyz, who would be able to see that information? Would the HR manager that I know, and see frequently automatically have to know that information? I would think that that would be a little embarassing.

All that your HR manager needs to know (if you use sick leave) is that you were out for medical reasons, when you are cleared to return to work, and what limitations you may have as a result of your medical condition and the period of time the limitations will exist.

A typical note from your health care provider would be:

John/Jane Doe has been under my care during the following period MM/DD/YYYY - MM/DD/YYYY. He/She may return to work on MM/DD/YYYY. He/She will have the following limitations: no XXXXX, YYYYY or ZZZZZX until MM/DD/YYYY or cleared by this office.

Signature (usually illegible)

Your health insurance, even if provided through your employer, may not reveal the information in your medical records under current HIPPA regulations.

With the HIPPA law in force, your HR manager should not be able to look at your chart. If they do this would be reason for a discharge and also a lawsuit.

You r HR rep will not even know that you had surgery except for whatever you say to him/her. Insurance does not report back to the company.
