if you are doing casual, we did one last month where we were all wearing jeans and white t-shirts..and barefoot! it was very cute (we obviously aren't formal people) :) but we did do a sitting for a more formal portrait and we used black and red. My main suggestion is stick with solids...black with your color of choice (depends on what color looks best with your skin tone)

It depends upon what mood you want to convey. If you want to convey fun and vitality then choose bold colors. If you want something more serious then choose dark blue or gray. Also, consider what the background will be and choose colors that will set you apart from the background, but not clash with it.

Black is always a good neutral color, but if you don't want the black look, for Christmas, red is a great color. My wife and sisters and their husbands just got our pictures done, they were in red, my wife and I were in black.

Kodachrome red always catches the eyes.
This is an unusual question. Not quite sure how to answer it.
Black suits with blue shirts and red ties. I've always liked that. It will be interesting to read everyone elses suggestions!

Since portrait work is balanced for skin towns, warm colors would be my first choice, since I can not see your family's complexions. Solid brights can be used to accent darker or neutral tones. Stay away from prints.
