Children don't generally qualify for SSI. SSI is Supplemental Security Income and is generally reserved for SS beneficiaries receiving unusually low benefits as their only means of support.

Children can qualify for Social Security Disability (SSD) if they have a mental or physical defect or deficiency that reasonably will prevent them from supporting themselves as an adult. In this case, it's not a needs-based entitlement.
