just followed recipe but batter seems very runny is this ok

Yes. It will puff up yet the sides will be very thin with a nice hollow space inside. The batter is usually runnier than egg nog.

You really have to be sure that the fat in your baking tin is HOT, HOT, HOT, before you add the batter to the tin. IF you don't have drippings then use lard.

Yes, it's supposed to be runny. It doesn't rise much, if any, either.
