You cannot receive HD broadcasts via Freeview in the U.K.

If you want HD, you will have to get either cable or satellite.

The earliest expected date for HD Freeview broadcasts is 2009.

You will not be able to watch HD on a 'normal' television. The scanning system and aspect ratios are different so it won't do it whatever the television input source is.

At the moment there are not any HD transmissions on Freeview anyway so you should wait and save up your money for a good set with an integrated digital tuner.

When you have your new set you could watch HD from Sky, Virgin or Blu-Ray/HD-DVD while you're waiting for HD Freeview.

When you look at what's available in HD broadcasting you should seriously ask yourself whether it's really worth the additional subscription money at the moment. It doesn't really improve the enjoyment of a football match and most other programmes (such as dramas) aren't much different on any set less than 50" (beware the cost of divorce if you're thinking of this big).

As long as there are mugs who'll pay an extra £10/month for a few HD channels (about 4 + a subscription film channel) then there'll be no incentive for Sky or Virgin to reduce the cost or increase the number of HD channels.

You will lose your analogue signal in due course and the set you have will be useless. The timing of this will be according to your location.
The next TV Set you buy will have to be HD Ready and a Freeview Box will be available if not already built into the new TV.
Yes, more expense but, in time the sets will reduce in price. Start saving now!

At this monet I don't think there are any set top boxes that can receive HD signals and display them sadly.
