I'm not exactly sure it is any different than anywhere else in your home. Are you worried about breathing something in? Ill tell you it will stink. Even if you clean it everyday, put baking soda in it, and get the litter with odor absorbing crystals.. It will stink, which is not very romantic. Cats are noctournal so your cat will be awake at night and most likely end up using it a few times during the night and you will hear it.. All night. Unless you are a hard sleeper. Also, are there any kids that will have access to the box? And are you or do you plan on becoming pregnant soon? Because you don't want your kids getting a hold of that for obvious reasons.. And if you are or want to be pregnant soon you must stay away from cat litter for fear of contracting toxoplasmosis in the pregnancy. It can cause serious problems and miscarriage in pregnancy. So a lot of things to consider when deciding where to put the litter box. Good luck.

NONE reallly although an asthmatic might be bothered...

Toxioplasmosis is actually a PARASITE and you have to touch the litter then your mouth to even have a chance at getting it.. its super rare.. cats can only shed it once in their live and only if they are exposed to a mouse who happens to be shedding it which they too can only do once in their life.....

the main problem with an unclean litter box is that the cat will refuse to use it.. and will start messing someplace else in the house.

The first thing that comes to mind is toxoplasmosis , and pregnant women should not be exposed to dirty kitty litter since that is a good source of the toxoplasma gondii eggs supposedly.
The infection rarely causes problems in healthy adults, but it can be dangerous to a developing fetus, possibly resulting in miscarriage, stillbirth, or severe complications such as blindness and mental retardation.

The smell may make you gag.
But as long as you're that close ... clean the litter box.

None. You have to touch the feces to get the bad bacteria, and that is usually only a problem if you are pregnant.
Get those gloves on and get to cleaning!!!
