they spend all their time getting their hair in the right place when they groom then it ruins it when they get their fur wet.

Not all cats hate water you know. Some breeds of cats (and I'm not including cat fish) love the water! But for the cats that don't like it, they just don't like getting wet because that causes them to sneeze. But, in case of an emergency, a cat is able to do the simple doggy pattle but won't like it!

If you are talking about bathing, i think they are just full of fear b/c they are in a vulnerable situation. They're not sure what's happening while it's going on. Some cats are ok with it and will even jump in the shower or bath with their owners. Try going very slow and even start with a wash cloth from the bath water. They also make waterless shampoos. If you are talking about drinking water, try buy one of those fountains for cats and leaving the bathroom/kitchen sink run at a very slow stream.

It depends on the cat but most cats hate water because:

1) They dont have heavy coats so when they are wet they get cold

2) They move slower when they are wet so they are a easy food target

There are many more reasons but those are the most common reasons

My old cat learned to deal with a bath every now and again. It's just something they are not exposed to all the time therefore they are scared. If you introduce water earlier in life, I think they may have a better time with it. I don't know...just guessing.

My cat doesn't mind the water. She has jumped into the bathtub with me a few times. And she is always drinking out of our leaky tap and doesn't care that her head gets wet.

Hmmm, not too sure but, it's the damnedest thing to watch mine get a bath LOL

She screams so loud it sounds as if she's saying "Nooooooooooooooooooooo"

(that's why she only gets like 4 baths a year *^_^*)

I don't know! They love fish, right?

What's the deal with that?

I guess they've learned to make us catch the fish for them. God bless 'em!

I wonder what would happen if you got a new kitty, and put her in the tub every day to get her used to it. Think she'd become a good swimmer?

some breeds that have been domesticated have been initially wilderness animals. that could have something to do with it. some cats love water. i think of for the main area it frequently "surprises" them to get moist or sprayed out of the blue. probable purely "greater delicate" to be dry, fairly with their style of fur, than it quite is to be moist.
