I love to cook, but my old, cheap pots and pans are on their way out. I'd love to replace them, but can't afford to spend a fortune. Any suggestions? Also, I hate the non-stick surface on mine... it's become scratched over time. Should I avoid non-stick? Thanks!

I've gotten all of my pots and pans (Farberware and Revere Ware, NO non-stick) at garage sales and thrift stores. People want non-stick or matching and toss the really good stuff! The old Revere Ware is great--very heavy compared with the new Revere Ware...probably the same for Farberware, but I'm not sure.

I just bought a set of T-Fal, they are not non-stick but a cast aluminum type, here in Canada I bought them at Walmart there brand name is Prodigea,

I got a 2 qt saucepan, 1 qt saucepan, fry pan and a 5 qt dutch oven all with tempered glass lids, and can be used in a oven under 400 d F.

Non-stick are good for cooking somethings, but there not good for the oven or high heat cooking, I looked at the "Jamie Oliver" line made by T-Fal but for $200 it was to pricey, I got these on sale for $79.95 Can, they do sell them in the US the name may be different just look for the words "cast aluminum " on the box, they retain heat and will last longer than stamped pans.

I'd suggest avoid buying a complete set of all one type of pots/pans. You WANT a nonstick for sauteeing and scrambling eggs, and you WANT cast iron for deep-frying, and stainless w/ a glass lid is fine for sauces and cooking veggies. So I'd pick and choose the peices you want from various lines of cookware. A good place to do this is somewhere like TJ Maxx or Marshall's, where they sell separate pans of all varieties, brands, and makes.

I know this sounds crazy, but check out IKEA. My best sauce, soup, and baking pans are non stick and I bought them all through them. They have really heavy bottoms and are inexpensive. They have a website if you don't live near one.
