The main importance when installing a car seat is to put it in the back seat and put it where it fits the best. Some middle backseats have bumbs, etc that make the carseat wobble and just not fit correctly. As long as the seat is installed properly you are okay putting it in any spot in the backseat.
I always had mine in the middle, but if you put it on the side, it's best to put it behind the passengers seat instead of drivers seat because then you can reach the baby if need be. :-)
Good luck!

Best place for an infant carseat...or any for that matter...is behind the driver. If its placed in the middle, and you get in an accident, everything that is loose in the front seat can go flying into the babys seat. Also, if you were to see a car coming straight at you from the side, your first instincts are to protect yourself, not your baby (its the fight or flight reaction), so with that being said, you would move as far over as you can to avoid that. It is the safest place- behind the driver. I worked at Babies R Us and one of the training classes i had to take dealt with how to properly install a car seat, where to put them, and what babies go in what seats- i was in the baby gear department. Call your local Sherriffs office- they do free carseat checks to ensure that you have the seats installed correctly and will also tell you what seat is the best one to put your baby in. Hope i helped!

RE:
Does an infant car seat have to be installed in the middle of the back seat?
-Or- would you sometimes place it behind the driver or passenger seat?

They say its supposed to be in the middle but it will work in any seat in the rear. My son is behind the drivers seat because if i put him in the middle his sister would bug him to death, shes in a car seat behind the passenger seat.

Ideally, they say it should be in the middle, but it can be behind one of the seats too. Either way works... I had it in the middle with my first kid and then behind the seat with my second... will be behind the seat with the third too. Just make sure no matter what position it's in that you read the installation directions correctly and put it in the right way.

The center is slightly safer because it's farther from a point of impact. BUT - it's more important that the install is secure. A seat should move less than one inch at the belt path (where the seatbelt or LATCH strap goes through the seat).

You can install it on either the driver or passenger seat sides as well.

An infant car seat is BEST if it is in the middle of the back seat....the reason being that- if your car is hit from either side, the baby is safest from harm in the middle of the back of the vehicle!!!
Sure people do put their carseats where ever they want, but again, BEST PLACE IS MIDDLE BACK!!!
Good luck!!

The middle rear seat is the safest place for the baby car seat to avoid side impact collision injuries. However if you have more than one child then you have little choice. In my case we have had our youngest in the middle and our older toddler next to him.

Anywhere in the back, but I believe it's suggested to put the carseat in the middle. If you have more than one child in a car seat you cant do that though.
