In any sort of emergency situation where you normally would have gone to Mass but stop to take care of the problem, it's certainly not a mortal sin to miss Mass.
Not having time/water to shower isn't really an emergency -- just go and sit in the back! -- but the fire hazard certainly is.
Either way, it's always good to call the priest and ask for dispensation, just to make sure your bases are covered. Also, you should ask if there is a late Mass in another parish, so maybe if things get squared away in time, you can go to a 5 p.m or a 6 p.m. Mass. (The 6 p.m. at the Cathedral is the latest Mass in my town.)
May God bless you & I hope you get the pipes fixed soon! Also, just because I've been through this myself, I always keep jugs of drinking water around so we can ALWAYS brush our teeth, no matter what happens. :-)

I'm not Catholic, or Christian for that matter, but if your church, or your god dismisses you for missing church your into the wrong thing(type of church/whatever) as long as you believe in "him" and live a good life helping people you're set. TV is considered evil, and watching it on Sunday is worse. When I lived in by my best friend whose Dad was a Devout christian he condemned the TV and all they do on those channels are try to rake in as much money for the show as they can, about 90% do not give money to charity or people in need like the local churches. I've turned from Christianity because of the corrupt christians and those who are so wound up in it they would kill people if their pastor said thats what the bible said to do. I help people, give to charity, and I plan to build an apartment building on my land so all of my homeless friends, like Dave and Sunny, and their friends can have a place to stay and keep their stuff, all they would have to do is take care of my garden and animals with which I could feed them-do you think, for all that and just because I don't believe in someones god I'm going to hell?

From Matthew 12:11: [Jesus] said to them, "If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out?
In other words, if something happens on the Sabbath that is life-threatening -- like if an animal on which you depend for life itself falls into a pit -- you would certainly be excused from strict observance of Sabbath rules.
I might question whether dirty hair qualifies under this rubric. You might want to focus more on that fact that broken pipes could severely damage your home, something you could not afford.
Watching Mass on TV is not a substitute for attending in person. You will not have the opportunity to encounter God through his people or in the Eucharist. But if it is the best you can do, I applaud you for doing that much!

My husband and I are Catholic and we don't go to church most of the time ... I can't sit that long and can't kneel or stand without help, so we don't go. I suggest that if your pipes are broken you need to call the plumber and get them FIXED ... but then you could go to church with greasy hair and stinking and nobody would say anything ... because Catholics aren't like that. No it is not a mortal sin not to go to mass ... and I doubt that you are a real Catholic, or you wouldn't have asked this silly question ... but believe it or not, if you do decide to go to church stinking and greasy, that is JUST FINE with all the real Catholics, who will only offer to help you in whatever way they can. GET REAL and learn about God and maybe your pipes won't burst!

The Catholic Church teaches that there are there are three things needed for a sin to be a mortal sin.
1. It has to be grievous.
2. You have to know that it is grievous.
3. You have to do it anyway -- knowing that it will hurt God.
This doesn't seem to apply to missing church because your pipes burst.

no its not...contrary to what the catholic may try to have you believe. you don't have to even watch mass tv.
My personal belief on heaven: the only thing that matters to get you in is how you act. It does not matter if you got to church 3 times a day every day you are not getting in if you are not a good person. going to church does not make you a good person.

I've always wondered where God gave man the right to classify sins. I have searched the scriptures and have come up blank. It's an enigma.
