Ok, a pal of mine at work was convicted of a felony when he was 21. Now he is 38

He mentioned that he liked to hunt when he was a kid but he couldnt now because of the felony.

I am under the impression that he still could hunt with a bow, is that correct?

Is there any way he could get his gun rights back, if not for handguns then maybe just for long guns?

He can hunt with a Bow but not with a firearm. By law the only way a convected felon can ever posses a firearm is by pardon.

I do not believe he is allowed to own a firearm, but bowhunting, trapping, and fishing are still great ways to enjoy the outdoors. Perhaps he could use a crossbow, depending on the state of residence.
I also have a friend who has been convicted of a felony (violent unfortunately). Rifle season was his favorite time of the year and it is awful that he can no longer participate. He still makes a great camp cook, and butcher, however, and has found many ways to continue enjoying the outdoors legally. Your friend probably needs to contact the court system (clerk, judge, etc..) that convicted him to find out all of the details. He may still be able to purchase a hunting license and participate in drives/pushes and other ways. If group hunting is allowed in your state, he may be able to donate an extra tag to fill. Be sure to have him check first. He may want to contact his state DNR (fish and game dept.) as well.

Bow hunting is OK to hunt with if your a felon. The only legal way for him to hunt with a firearm is for him to either get a pardon form either the governor of your state or even better is the president.

The only way your buddy can get his gun rights fully restored is through a pardon by a state governor, or by a Presidential pardon. Yes, the fed. law only applies to firearms, he can hunt with a bow and arrow.

Apparently, some states allow felons to have access to firearms, as there are some felons who join the military with no problems. Check the rules in your state.

As for hunting, you can hunt with a bow, still.

Yes he can hunt with a bow. He may even be able to have a gun depending on what State you are in. In some States the prohibition ends with the term of the felony. Depends on the felony too.

Charles is right, at least from my experience. As long as the felony was not a violent one like Domestic Violence or Robbing a Bank he might still be able to qualify for a firearm.
