Why is my Microsoft Office XP Word saving my documents as WordPad intead of a regular .doc?

I have Office XP and I cannot get it to save documents as regular Word .doc. It keeps saving them as WordPad which I hate. I cannot figure this out. Help please!!!

Try this. Open Word and click "Tools" and the "Options". Now click the "Save" tab. Click the drop down arrow for "Save Word Files As:" and set the file extension that you want Word to use as a Default file extension.
