My dad thinks that driving school is a waste of money and that he is just going to teach me himself. And since you need driving school to get a license in my state (Ohio) if your under 18, this is a problem. According to him I have to wait until I'm 18 to get a license and that he's just going to keep renewing my temps. Please help me to convince him of what a stupid idea this is (proof, such as web links would help alot)...thanks

If it's your DAD will be paying for lessons, then let him teach you MOST of the stuff you need, and ask him a bit later for some "official" lessons to let you get the test.

Official driving instructors are trinaed to be better teachers and will NOT pass on bad habits . . . . having said that, My Dad taught entire family, including his brothers, but had done the UK's advanced driver training . . .

If he's paying, and owns the car you have to go with his decision though

You need to kindly explain to your dad that no matter how good he is at driving there will still be some things that only a driving instructor can teach you. No offence to your dad but he will have been driving for a number of years now and will drive a certain way because he finds it more comfortable or easier, this may not be how you are going to be tested, or the best way for you personally.

Also your dad loves you and no matter how much a parent thinks they can easily teach their child to drive and that it would be much safer to it's really not! Your dad loves you and is to attached to you to be impartial when your driving. He could panic, be over critical, not be critical enough or many other things!

Laws change from when your dad learnt to drive and did his test, there may be different regulations now that he doesn't know about that only a qualified driving instructorcan teach you! You really just need to sit down and talk to your dad about this. Stay calm and talk rationally to him, show him how mature you are, that you've thought this through carefully. Maybe offer to get a part time job to help pay for the driving lessons?

I hope this works out for you!

One benefit of driving school is that the emotions of your relationship are taken out of it. Does your dad jump on you for every little thing? When he does, do you get resentful? If you have a good relationship, it will probably work out okay. Also, those driving school cars usually have extra controls for the instructor in case something goes wrong.

Will he let you take the course if you pay for it yourself? That sounds like the answer if you don't want to wait until you're 18.

Thats not stupid. Hes protecting you, and you should respect that.

I did not get my licence untill I was 21, and that was my own choice. Too many young people are killed in car wrecks.

Im sure your dad knows how to teach you and will teach you all the right things.

I know it sucks and I know you are prolly dying to have your licence, but trust me, those two little years will make a huge difference on your level of responsibilty and cautiousness. It will also cut your chances of being a statistic down a lot.

You could tell your Dad that the Reason you NEED to take Driving School is Because, the Instructors there are Trained (of course!) and are up to date on any laws that may have changed, etc... Since your Dad was in school. Plus, it gives you more driving time, and a 3rd parties Opinion on "How" your Driving really is. Good Luck !!!

For the same reason I made a pretty good living teaching sailing to women... I didn't yell at them and I was more patient with them than their boy friends and/or husbands

His house, his rules.

And honestly, it's a good rule. I wish they would legally raise the driving age to 18 anyway.

You only think it's a stupid idea because you want to drive.

I hate to tell you this but that's not true. A study in Ontario Canada shows just the opposite. It shows that kids who have formal drivers ed training actually get into more accidents then those who's parents train them.

I agree with your dad on this one.
