.png is Portable Network Graphics, and it is in response to .gif being a proprietary file format that belongs to a private company. PNG can preserve transparent backgrounds and a bigger color pallete.

.tiff is the granddaddy of graphic file formats. Again, there can be royalty issues and especially if using any compression scheme that makes .tiff images more compact. Tagged Image Format can represent several color space depths.

.tiff offers a lot of options that make it universal to use concerning hardware it displays/stores on.

.ai is properitary Adobe and makes the smallest file storage. You sacrifice a preview icon, and tiff or jpeg image "placeholder" for word-processor softwares. In short, .ai is Postscript 1.1 without the bitmap preview thumbnail that enlarges a file that might not need a bitmap. Many non-Adobe products import the .ai file format.

.svg is an ongoing effort at a graphics programming language that will use a free drawing library. SVG -- scalable vector graphics is not standardized yet but it will offer small files with superior graphics for web.

png and tiff are formats that are less used but are the same as a gif in most ways- they are good for the web-

SVG and AI are more adobe specific and are used to define more unique details of a graphic and will not work in most browsers.
