Some good advice above on how to get *rid* of them. The OTC products generally are effective if used properly, and as directed. Shampoo your hair with the product RID or something similar with same ingredients. Olive oil will not kill lice, neither will mayonaisse. (I had a friend slather mayo all in his head in an attempt to kill them.) Lice *do* prefer clean hair, so if your hair is slightly oily, it may repel them, but it won't kill them or their eggs.

After shampooing with the RID, get someone to pick thru your hair for you. I advise doing this outdoors, for obvious reasons. The nits (lice eggs) are attached to your individual hairs, about one or two inches from the scalp. These nits must be combed all the way to the end of your hair, in order to be completely removed. If your hair is very long, you may consider cutting some of the length off to make this process easier. After about one week, repeat the shampooing process to eliminate any nits that may have been missed and have hatchehd into adult lice. You may need to repeat the comb out process.

To prevent future infestations: Lice prefer clean hair. So do most of us humans. However, a little light hairspray, mousse, gel, leave-in conditioners, or other products in your hair, will make your hair less appealing to lice. Never share combs, brushes, hats, or any other kinds of hair products with *anyone*.

Good luck.

If you do have it....

the above answers are all part true...

Ovide is a new prescription that does work.
It is very expensive.

Rid doesnt work well any more because the bugs have grown used to it.

Now for the Olive Oil and dish washing soap combo..Ready...

My County Health Nurse told me on several occassions as I take in children and children go to school and children get it from sharing......how to get rid of it with out chemicals as chemicals that close to your brain are a risk....

Cooking oil... liquid...cant be light...can be Olive Oil but that is very expensive and it isnt necessary if you just dont use low fat... as it is the fat that smothers the bugs... so you are only killing the bugs.. leave on for 2 hours wrap in plastic wrap (I used store shopping bag and taped it). Then wash out as best as possible with shampoo...it wont all come out..there is where D A W N and I mean D A W N dishsoap comes in...to get it out.

now the eggs will still hatch..so you will have to repeat this process in 3 days. You see, the bugs will still not be mature enough to be able to lay eggs or reproduce.. do this process every 3 days for a total of 4 cycles and you have it done all natural...

This will also soften the nits on your hair so you can easily comb them out.

You will also have to clean your home accordingly..

Ovide is the closest thing to the wonder cure..but you are probably looking at a $75 doctor visit per person in your household and at least $75 per person in your household for the perscription.

In Closing...It is not a sin to have lice doesnt matter how clean or dirty you are, anyone can get it....but keeping it and doing nothing about it is, well just not ideal... and Lice if you have ever had it once is a real pain in the wa-zoo if you know what I mean!!!!

If you have lice, the first thing to do is get some professional stregenth RID. You can buy it at Walmart over the counter.
Olive oil will NOT work, Neither will dishwashing soap. If it was that easy to get rid of... it wouldn't be a problem.

Apply RID per directions on the box
Once you have rinsed your hair you will need a friend/family member to help you.
This is a LONG tedious process

Part your hair into 8 different sections and secure them with a hair tie

Part one THIN section of hair.
Use the RID lice comb.
Put it right at the scalp and pull down on the hair while holding the ends of the hair firmly
The lice hold themselves on the hair shaft by 'hugging' it. You are trying to pull them down the hair shaft so they fall off!

YOU MUST be meticulous and do every strand of hair like this. If you don't, they will come back

My kids used to come home with lice every other weekend from their fathers house. I dealt with this time and time again!
It was HORRIBLE having TWO children I had to 'nit pick'

After your entire head has been picked. Put it up with a NEW CLEAN hair tie! Throw the ones you used to part your hair AWAY!

Now, Vacuum your entire house, strip your bed, wash your sheets on HOT and OVERDRY them on HOT to kill any lice that may have fallen off while sleeping.
Vacuum your mattress, down in the creases, down the side of the mattress don't take any chances you can get it again.
Put any pillows or stuffed animals in a sealed plastic bag and leave it there for four weeks.

Vacuum where your head would touch on the back of your fav chair... all chairs if you sit different places.

Once you've sat for SEVERAL hours while someone picks your head, you will NEVER want to get lice again!

Next step: Check other family memebers for lice. It's easily spread and if you are finally rid of them, someone else may be infected and the whole process may need to be repeated!

I also wash the walls around my bed with lysol water and vacuum the carpet at the wall and on top of the baseboard just to be sure.

The good thing is, My children never got 're-infected' from home. I finally petitioned the court to restrict overnight visitation with their father.

There may be a website that can tell you how to do this laid out better, perhaps numbered, but this is what I did. GOOD LUCK!

It's not enough to kill the lice, you have to remove the nits, or eggs lice lay on your hair, too.

The easiest way to remove the nits is with a small-toothed comb made especially for removing nits. They come in all lice kits at the drugstore. You can soap your hair up with any slick conditioner or olive oil, and those nits just slide right off.

You'll also need to wash your bedding in hot water. Also wash combs, hairbrushes and other hair accessories in hot water. And caps.

How to Get Rid of Lice and Nits in the Hair and Scalp

Head lice are much more common in children than adults. They can easily be passed from one child to another (through hats, scarves, combs, etc.) in schools or other places where children congregate. Getting head lice is not a sign of poor health habits or being dirty.

Children who have lice and nits in the hair or on the scalp are not allowed to attend school until the head is free of lice and nits.

If scalp is sore or bleeding the child should be examined by a physician before treatment.
Treatment

1. Wash the hair with a special shampoo or lotion from the drugstore, carefully following the specific instructions issued with the product used. The available shampoos vary in their ability to kill eggs (nits) as well as adult lice. You may wish to check with your doctor.
2. Comb the hair with a fine tooth comb to remove dead lice and nits. To help remove the nits completely, you may soak the hair with white vinegar and then apply (for 30 to 60 minutes) a damp towel soaked in the same solution. Then comb out with a fine-tooth nit comb. The head may be held over a newspaper. Clean comb frequently with a tissue or paper towel. Discard the newspaper and tissue/paper towel in a disposable bag. Place the bag in the garbage.
3. Combs, brushes, curlers, hair ribbon, etc, should be washed throughly with soap and very hot water. Clothing, hats, stuffed toys, bed linens and towels should be washed in very hot water, dry cleaned or sealed in a plastic bag for 10 days.
4. The hair of all family members should be checked and treated if necessary.
5. A daily nit check is advisable for at least 10 days following a treatment. Repeat treatment if necessary.

Be Careful

* • Follow the directions carefully. Use the amount of shampoo indicated in the instructions.
* • Have the child lean over the sink/tub/basin, limiting the shampoo to the scalp or neck.
* • If the nits are difficult to remove, rinse the hair with white vinegar.
* • Protect the eyes during treatment to avoid irritation.
* • DO NOT give the medicine by mouth. Keep it out of the reach of children.

First you must insure that you have it. Then, call your doc for a prescription of Ovide shampoo. It is the only thing I have found that will actually rid of the bugs and the nits. The lice nowadays have become immune to the over the counter home kits. Good luck. It's a tough battle!

They have at home kits for lice, if you have lice you should definately use one of those. They have kits to spray down everything in your house with. I would definately wash your sheets and everything on your bed. Best of luck!!
