My cat was suffering with arthritis pain for a few months and dropped her weight dramatically. She seems to have turned around after Cosequin and more recently Dasuquin. But then she started pawing her mouth and gagging while she eats and drinks. My vet said her mouth is inflamed on both sides but had a hard time examining her. She said she may have oral cancer but I can't afford the biopsy. Plus, putting her under is very risky. She's 15+ and FIV+. She got an antiinflammatory injection yesterday and has already stopped pawing her mouth. I'm giving her Clavamox for a week. Is this a good sign that it's just an infection? Or is it inconclusive at this point? She also may have HyperT. I thought maybe it was a bad reaction to the arthritis supplements I've been giving her. But everything I read about them says they have no known side effects. She now has lots of energy and is eating a lot!

It sounds like she is doing a lot better. I would continue the same treatment unless things turn worse.

That's what is supposed to happen after the injection. It's reducing the inflammation like it's supposed to. It also stimulates appetite and makes kitty drink and wet more.

It doesn't mean that it's just an infection, at all. The antiinflammatory effect happens no matter what the cause is. If you finish the clavamox and the injection wears off (about a month, I think) and the problem doesn't come back, then you might think it was an infection. I wouldn't count on it.

She has energy and is eating?

That's really what matters, it means she's not in pain and is living a decent life. Not to be a jerk but you might have to face the inevitable soon, don't keep that cat alive for the sake of keeping her alive.
