I found $1000 in a money bag in the street. It has no information on the bag, nor in the bag as well. Should I just give it to the police?

No, keep it. Possession is 9/10ths of the law. Growing up my friends and I found about $800 in cash in a bank envelope in the street. We were so excited and making such a seen that a man came up to us and said that it was his. Being young we agreed to give it to him and went on our way. Then we thought about what proof did he have that it was his??? We should have stuffed the money in our pocket and walked away. Case in point, cash belongs to it's possessor.

So you should keep the money just make sure 10 or 20 percent goes to a good cause. Your Church or your favorite charity.....Or stuff 100 of it in a Salvation Army pot in front of a Mall and enjoy your Christmas shopping a little more this year.

Depending on what you mean by a money bag would depend on what I'd do. If your talking about a purse, simply contacting the individual hopefully via some ID or phone book may help.

If its a night deposit bag, then it should be turned into the police. Someone may get fired for losing it so you may end up making some really good friends in the process. If nobody claims it, you will get it returned to you.

If it's a ziplock baggy with no other details, then I'd keep it. Probably some drug dealers cash and better you than them to have it for Christmas :)

Turn it into the police - after a certain amount of time - if no one claims it - they give it to you. Then you can spend it with a clear conscious.

What if that bag belonged to someone making a night deposit for a business? Because the bag was lost - the employee has to pay the money out his/her own pocket? You might as well reach into their wallet and steal $1000. If the money had belonged to you and you lost it - how would you feel if no one turned it in?

Do the right thing and call the police.

What if this was the deposit bag for a new small business and losing it would mean bankruptcy?

Then again, what if it belongs to a drug dealer?

The problem is you don't know, so turn it in.

Our police dept. has a provision that you are allowed to claim found money after a certain time period has expired.

Do the right thing.

In all honesty no...unless it held some sort of clue as to who's it was or if after holding on to it for a while and read in the paper that someone was looking for it. If you knew me you would say thats not like me but the way things are today I wouldnt trust the authorities that I turned it into.

Morality, ain't it a *****. Morally you should give it to the police. If no one claims it in 30 days its yours. But $1,000 cash will be "claimed".
Watch the lost and found ads for a couple of weeks before spending it. Give it back if you see an ad for it.

You can file an incident report for the money. If someone goes to your local police department looking for it they can find your report. If you don't have info redacted they might even give you a reward (I wouldn't hold your breath, though).
