I bought some chicken around mid-September. They're frozen breast pieces. Then my hubby got put in the hospital and life got a little crazy for a while so I never cooked it. But it's been frozen the whole time. So...is it safe to make now? Or should I toss it and buy some new stuff?

This is going to sound really dumb...but how exactly do you know if it's freezer burnt? I'm a young wife (only 20) and never thought to learn how to cook from my mom, so I'm kinda clueless.

I'm sure it's fine. Even freezer burn, if it's just a little, wouldn't mean the meat is spoiled. You can cut off small sections. You lose a little flavor quality, but with seasonings and proper cooking, it would be quite fine. When chicken is freezer burned, you'll see where portions of the meat is a lighter color and is obviously dried out in that area. If your chicken was wrapped well, it's probably fine. From September isn't all that long.
Hope hubby is back in good health.

It is perfectly fine to use. Most things can be frozen for up to a year. If it is freezer burned, you will be able to smell it. It has a smell to it....I really cannot explain the smell. Kinda like an old freezer with ice built up in it that has been there for years. That is the closest I can come to explaining it. Have you ever fixed something like a frozen waffle, and after it was cooked, it tasted like the freezer smells? Something like that. Ice is usually packed on the food as well. However, some ice will freeze on meats and such anyway, so that is not the easiest way to tell. It hasn't been in there very long, so it is not freezer burned. It is still good.
Feel free to email me for any cooking advice. I LOVE to cook.

Pre- frozen chicken breasts have a very good "shelf" life in the freezer.
It should be fine. When preparing if there are any strange aromas.... that would be the time to pitch.

It should be fine to eat but you shouldn´t leave it much longer. Make sure you defrost it well (in the fridge is best). If it´s freezer burnt it will have a dry look and texture with white patches.Cook it as soon as it is defrosted.

ok freezer burn is ice crystals that have formed on the meat. the meat will look kinda fuzzy and discolored. if the chicken has been frozen the whole time i would thaw it and cook it. it should be fine.

It should be fine as long as it is not freezer burnt. I buy meats when the are on sale and freeze them to cut my grocery bill each month.

It's probably still good. Personally, I have a thing about food (even frozen) and I'd probably throw it away.
But you should be fine.

the chicken''s fine. freezer burn has a distinct odor to it. not rancid but, kind of a burn smell. it's kind of hard to describe. the meat/chicken will also have a strange color if it's burned
