do not buy anything called "cooking wine" that is not real wine that you would drink. cooking wine has added salt that you do not need. It is better to control the salt yourself than have wine with it. You should be just normal white wine, sauvingon blanc, chardonnay etc. and cook with that.

If you don't want to break the bank for white wine, try 2 buck chuck chard from trader joe's. or at the local grocery store brands like vendange, woodbridge, paul masson, almaden, are all fairfly decent wines for cooking. I normally buy something like Vintner's Reseve Chardonnay or Sauv Blanc from Kendall-Jackson. Something I would actually serve to go with the meal.

Yes it does and it also contains an unbelievable amount of salt, which means that your dish is prejudiced right from the start. As others have already mentioned, cook with what you would drink! The alcohol dissipates during cooking and only the wine flavor is left in the dish.
Cooking wines are low grade chemically stabilized junk that have been on supermarket shelves for who knows how long. Anyone who tells you it all tastes the same either knows nothing about cooking or nothing about wine.

Cooking wine has alcohol in it. It usually also has a lot of salt or other stabilizers which keep it from going quickly to vinegar once opened.

Some say that you "should never cook with anything you wouldn't drink." Unless you've got an unbelievably discerning palate, you won't be able to tell the difference in a recipe.

Just don't drink the cooking wine. Ew.

Cooking with wine is a great touch to almost any recipe that calls for meat or fish. Chardonnay, oak barrelled is a favorite because of the mellow notes that it provides when cooked. Alcohol will cook off after about 30 seconds in a hot mix (over 175 degrees) and almost instantaneously while using it to deglaze a pan (of all that goodness!) More is not always better either, use your sense of taste before adding the entire bottle!
