What kind of cactus do I have?
http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2747942920099979390GFnXpY

I've had this cactus for 5 years, and would like to know what I have. The internet has failed me and I haven't been able to figure it out on my own by googling things.

When I first got the cactus, it was smaller (it's still small) and over the years not only has it grown overall, but it's sprouted a ton of smaller versions of itself all over. It grows flowers like mad during the summer.

All of it's "babies" or whatever those are seem to be crowding the cactus around the base. Should I be removing them?

I am not sure of the name of the cactus but I do know that you can remove them if you want and start new cacti. But you do not have to remove them.

Look up how to root cactus and you'll have a bunch of baby plants if you wish.

That is not a Christmas Cactus. A Christmas Cactus blooms out on long arms.

Go to pictures and names of cactus.com under your Yahoo search. There are hundreds of cacti pictures with the names. I am sure yours is there.

Looks like some species of Optunia or Prickly Pear. Optunia is the largest cactus species and has over 360 varieties. Don't know exactly which one this is. Prickly Pear can be a few inches to several yards tall, the one in your picture is the biggest one I've ever seen. Does it flower in spring or fall and then bear fruit? The fruit of the prickly pear is often edible. I would contact a local nursery or master gardner program for more help identifying the exact species. Good luck.

It appears to be a species of Notocactus; possibly N. mammulosus. You can either repot it into a larger pot or pick off the "babies" and pot them up to grow on and give them to friends or family.
