and if they did abuse the stuff wouldn't it just knock them out. Trying to decide if we need a padlock on our door to keep teens and older kids from taking it. I didn't think it would do anything other than make you sleepy. Have been told a little different. Thanks.

Well, at first it would knock them out, probably, but if they advance to using it regularly and building a tolerance, which is an absolute possibility with this, there is a definite "high" associated with it.. I myself would not say "high" but when I abused them after being on them regularly for over 5 years, I got a complete melting feeling and more importantly the sense of nothing mattering at all--something I imagine would be very appealing to stressed out, angst ridden kids.

Listen, it is a ***** of a drug to come off of so my advice is, don't risk it. Lock it up.

Xanax is addictive both psychologically and physically. It is possible that it would enhance your feelings that you can handle any situation and thus give you a sense of empowerment, which are similar feelings cocaine gives you. It is a mind altering drug and some children and adolescents like the sense of altered experience. Lock it up. It should not be abused. It can also lead to psychotic feelings. I hope this helps. look up the side effects on the web (www.rxlist.com) and ask your doctor. Don't take medication without asking your doctor for side effects.

I know differently i used to take xanax for the anxiety that i suffer which would help me to relax and also to sleep. But my ex husband decided to get into my bottle and took some and it most certainly had a different effect on him he was wide awake and very intoxicated.
Perscrbed medications have differnt effects on different ppl so they should never be allowed near young ppl.
I would also like to note that xanax as a short term use medication is very effective for anxiety but it can in the long term have bad effects with anxiety pls be aware of this and keep on good contact with your Doctor about this.
